Have you visited Covenant's science lab recently? Just this morning, secondary science teacher Louette deJager had exciting news to share about Striped Bangaii Cardinals Bonnie and Clyde. The fish have had babies - and they are adorable!
Covenant dad Louis Zapeda has spent the last year and a half cultivating salt water tanks in the lab that also contain a few of God's awesome creations. He strategically placed Bonnie and Clyde in one of the tanks hoping they would grow to enjoy their new surroundings. For the last 30 days, it's been obvious that Clyde and Bonnie were expecting - because Clyde's mouth has been full (lately, VERY full). You see, God designed male Bangaii Cardinals to be caregivers to their offspring, and the way Clyde does his job is by keeping the eggs, hatchlings and then tiny fish inside his mouth until they are ready to live on their own.
During class this morning, Clyde released three of the several offspring he has been protecting for the last 30 days. Some photos show Bonnie waiting patiently outside the protective bag that contains Clyde and his charges. Mrs. deJager and Mr. Zapeda expect to see more babies released as the day progresses, and everyone hopes Bonnie will give Clyde a reprieve before presenting him with more babies to care for - because poor Clyde hasn't eaten anything for the last 30 days!
Stay tuned...students have some new fish to name. Isn't God's creation awesome?!
